What makes a tunnel tent
A tunnel tent takes its shape from parallel poles and its guylines. Steep walls give you plenty of usable space, and the porch has room for kit. All ten models pitch fly first with the inner hanging underneath, so the sleeping area stays dry when you pitch in the rain.
In return, a tunnel tent needs pegs: it only stands firm once pegged out. Dome and geodesic tents keep their basic shape on their poles – but they too work best pegged out. Our guide to tent designs compares the types.

Which tunnel tent suits you?
Light for trekking
Pioneer and Tempest from the Zero G Line have a 20D ripstop nylon flysheet and DAC aluminium poles. The Pioneer (1,795 g) sleeps two lengthways and has two side entrances; the Tempest comes in 2, 3 and 4 person sizes (1,854 g to 2,984 g).
3 person tunnel tent
The Tempest 3 weighs 2,534 g. For heavier fabric, the Outpost 3 weighs 3,675 g: 68D ripstop polyester flysheet with a 5,000 mm hydrostatic head and a 7,000 mm floor.
5 person and family tunnel tents
The Intrepid 5 (5,296 g) has an extra sleeping cabin for one. Voyager and Cirrus w/ Kids Cabin offer 1.80 m standing height; the Cirrus sleeps up to 6 in two cabins.
Room to stretch out
Tempest 2, 3 and 4 plus Outpost 2 and 3 are also listed under tents with extended sleeping length. The asymmetric inner of the Tempest 2 gives one side enough length for people over 2 m.
Quick to pitch, plenty of porch space
A tunnel tent is usually quicker to pitch than a dome tent, because you only feed the poles through their sleeves – there are no crossing points to connect:
- Feed the poles into the sleeves.
- Peg out the two corners at the foot end.
- Pull the tent forward to tension it and peg the two front corners.
- The tent is up. Then peg out the remaining guylines.
The porch on a tunnel tent is usually larger than on a dome tent for the same number of people. That gives you room for packs, wet clothing and boots – and a sheltered spot to cook in bad weather. Only ever cook in the porch, never in the inner tent, keep the door open and never leave the stove unattended.
Design details
Tempest 2 and 4 and Intrepid 5 have three continuous external flat pole sleeves. They offer little wind resistance and reduce flapping noise. On Tempest 2 and 4 and Intrepid 4 you can unclip the inner once pitched, on the Intrepid 5 the sleeping cabin – turning the porch into a large living space. On Voyager and Cirrus, poles and sleeves are colour-coded, so one person can pitch them quickly.
Spare parts and repairs
A broken pole section or a damaged zip does not mean a new tent. Our spare parts service supplies single pole sections. Larger damage is handled by our repair service – in the UK by our partner Scottish Mountain Gear.
Tunnel tent FAQs
Tunnel tent or dome tent?
A tunnel tent is usually quicker to pitch, has a larger porch and pitches fly first, but needs pegs. Dome and geodesic tents keep their basic shape on their poles, but they too work best pegged out. More in our guide to tent designs.
