Freestanding tents: shape from the poles
Whether it is a 3 person dome tent or a geodesic tent for one, these tents keep their basic shape on their poles: they cross over and tension the tent before the first peg goes in. You can move a freestanding tent after pitching and set it up where pegs are hard to place.
Good to know: no tent is completely freestanding. Porches and guylines need pegs, and a tent only stands firm in wind once pegged out. To get the most from your tent, always use pegs – “freestanding” simply means it keeps its basic shape without them.
Dome: crossing poles joined by hubs – the Charger. Geodesic: the poles cross at several points and also support the porch – the Pathfinder Elements. Hybrid: dome principle with hubs and extra poles, for example the Exogen 2 XL and Venture 1 and 2 with two aluminium hubs.

Trail weight: flysheet, inner tent and poles, without pegs, guylines and stuff sacks. All values from Wechsel product data 2026. Freestanding: as per Wechsel product description; "inner yes" = the inner stands without pegs, the porches are pegged out. Every tent works best pegged out.
Which dome tent suits you?
3 person dome tent
The Charger 3 is a dome tent with a 220 x 170 cm floor and 110 cm sitting height, trail weight 2,957 g. Lighter: the Exogen 3, a freestanding hybrid at 2,211 g from the Zero G Line.
2 person dome tent
The Charger 2 weighs 2,637 g. Lighter and freestanding: Exogen 2 (1,656 g) and Donna (1,686 g). The Exogen 2 XL has a 245 cm sleeping length.
Geodesic tent for one
The Pathfinder Elements (1,921 g) is self-supporting including its porch, has two entrances and a camouflage flysheet – also listed under Elements Bushcraft. Freestanding and lighter: the Exogen 1 at 1,130 g.
Lightweight and semi-freestanding
Aeron 1 (766 g) and Aeron 2 (1,086 g) have carbon poles and are semi-freestanding: part of the tent stands on its poles, the rest is pegged out. Both are also listed under bikepacking tents.
Design details
With Venture 1 and 2 and Charger 2 and 3, you can pitch the flysheet on its own with the groundsheet – a light shelter for warm nights. On the Charger the flysheet clips to the inner with buckles. The table shows how each model pitches: inner first is quick in dry weather, fly first keeps the inner dry in the rain.
Spare parts and repairs
Freestanding tents carry their tension in the poles. If a section breaks, our spare parts service supplies single pole sections. Larger damage is handled by our repair service – in the UK by our partner Scottish Mountain Gear.
Dome and geodesic tent FAQs
What is a freestanding tent?
A tent that keeps its basic shape on its poles, also called self-supporting. No tent is completely freestanding, though: porches and guylines need pegs, and it only stands firm once pegged out. Always use pegs wherever the ground allows.
Dome tent or geodesic tent?
On a geodesic tent the poles cross at more points. That spreads wind and snow load over more poles, at the cost of a slightly longer pitch. More in our guide to tent designs.
Which freestanding tent for 2 people?
Exogen 2 (1,656 g), Exogen 2 XL (1,671 g), Donna (1,686 g) and Venture 2 (2,544 g). On the Charger 2 (2,637 g) the inner stands on its own.
Which freestanding tent for 1 person?
Exogen 1 (1,130 g), Venture 1 (1,864 g) and the geodesic Pathfinder Elements (1,921 g), whose porch is self-supporting too.
Dome tent or tunnel tent?
A tunnel tent has a bigger porch and pitches fly first, but needs pegs. For 4 to 6 people we only make tunnel tents.
