How a self-inflating mat works
Inside is an open-cell foam core. When you open the valve, the foam expands and draws in air. A few strokes with the pump sack bring the mat to the firmness you want: more air if you sleep on your back, less if you sleep on your side. Even with little air, the foam keeps insulating.
Before first use: blow a little air in and leave the mat with the valve open, so the foam can expand fully for the first time.

How the Vasta is built
Both Vasta mats follow the Core Comfort Concept: insulation is highest in the centre section to keep your torso warm. Horizontal punch-outs in the 3D foam save weight and let more air into the mat. The stuff sack doubles as a pump.
Vasta 5.0
5 cm thick, R-value 5.9, 1,770 g. Packs to 68 x 20 cm. For campsites and holidays, including frosty nights. View the Vasta 5.0 →
Vasta 7.5

Self-inflating, air or foam?
Self-inflating mats sit between the other two types: more comfortable and warmer than a foam mat, heavier and bulkier than an air mat. For trips with a rucksack or bike, lighter options are listed under ultralight sleeping mats.
Valve replacement by our repair service
If the valve on your self-inflating mat fails, our repair service replaces it. Store the mat unrolled with the valve open between trips so the foam stays springy. More under Care & Cleaning.
Self-inflating mat FAQs
Does a self-inflating mat inflate fully on its own?
The foam draws in most of the air. Top it up to the firmness you want with the pump sack.
What thickness do I need?
5 cm, as on the Vasta 5.0, is enough for most nights in a tent. 7.5 cm, as on the Vasta 7.5, feels softer and insulates even more with an R-value of 7.2.
Is a self-inflating mat suitable for backpacking?
The Vasta mats weigh 1,770 and 2,470 g and are designed for camping. For backpacking, an air mat such as the 490 g Aera M from our ultralight sleeping mats is the better choice.
Are the Vasta mats suitable for winter?
Yes. With R-values of 5.9 and 7.2, both are among our insulated sleeping mats.
How should I store the mat?
Unrolled, with the valve open, dry and out of direct sunlight. Kept compressed in its stuff sack, the foam gradually loses its spring.
