Foam sleeping mats: simple and air-free
A foam mat – often called a roll mat in the UK – needs no valve and no pump. Its closed cells don't absorb water, and there is no air chamber for a sharp stone to puncture. In return it is thinner and bulkier than an air mat. That is why many people use a foam sleeping mat for camping twice over: on its own in huts and under a tarp, and as an underlay beneath an air mat.

Which foam mat suits you?
Lightest
The Mateno Z-Fold weighs 300 g and folds concertina-style to 55 x 14 x 10 cm. It is down in seconds and also works as a sit mat.
More warmth for your torso
The Facila IXPE is thicker in the centre than at the head and foot ends, so it insulates most where you lose most heat.
Wide and long
The Facila Comfort AX measures 200 x 60 cm. Its AX coating reflects body heat; at R-value 2.0 it is the warmest of our foam mats.
XPE or IXPE?
Both are cross-linked closed-cell polyethylene foams. XPE is cross-linked chemically, IXPE physically by irradiation. Our Mateno is made of XPE, both Facila mats of IXPE.
Under your air mat: R-values add up
Put a foam mat under your air mat and the R-values roughly add up. The Facila Comfort AX (2.0) under the Aera M (6.0) gives around 8.0. The foam also protects the base of the air mat. More under insulated sleeping mats.

How warm is a foam mat?
Our foam mats have R-values of 1.7 to 2.0 – enough for summer nights. In spring and autumn, combine one with an air mat or self-inflating mat.
Foam mat or air mat?
Foam can't puncture and is quick to lay out. An air mat is more comfortable, warmer and packs smaller – the Glacio packs to 27 x 8 cm.
Are your foam mats roll mats?
The Mateno Z-Fold and Facila Comfort AX fold concertina-style rather than roll. Folded up, they give you a dry seat on breaks.
Do you make foam sit pads?

How do I clean a foam mat?
