The Exogen 1 is a freestanding hybrid tent for one person – including a vestibule. Two aluminum hubs at the poles ensure high wind stability. The inner tent of the Exogen 1 is set up first. The additional pole forms the vestibule, as soon as the fly sheet is stretched over it. The freestanding design not only makes it easier to pitch the tent, but also offers flexible camping on different grounds. The inner tent is equipped with mosquito mesh in the door as well as at the foot and head ends. Thanks to the steeply rising walls, the full lying length of 215 cm can be optimally utilised. Two large mesh pockets keep things organised and offer space for otherwise odds and ends. The packing size is optimized for bikepacking. By removing the poles, the length of the pack sack can be reduced to just 25 cm – ideal for travelling with small bags. The tent and poles can be stowed separately.

Well balanced package
The Wechsel Exogen 1-person is actually something of an odd one out. It is not the lightest tent, not the most spacious one-person tent, nor is it the most stormproof tent on the market. Instead, it offers an excellent balance of all those characteristics combined. Because of that, its strengths are not immediately obvious as standout features. Every tent excels in one area. One may be extremely stormworthy but heavier than an ultralight tent (which in turn performs less well in strong winds). Another backpacking tent may have a larger floor area but offer less usable living space. And that ultralight tent may be made from materials that compromise long-term durability. What the Exogen does particularly well is bring all these qualities together in a balanced package. It is not a large tent, but it provides exactly enough room to move around comfortably, sit up, and reach your gear inside the tent (I am 1.80 m / 5'11" tall). It is not the lightest tent available, but it is exceptionally stable in windy conditions, with the inner tent fabric remaining taut rather than flapping around your ears. The additional continuous pole that runs across the main structure contributes significantly to this stability. The chosen materials also feel solid and durable enough to provide many years of reliable use. Another feature that is personally very important to me is how easy the tent is to pitch—something you do not want to spend too much time on after a long and tiring day. You do not have to endlessly tweak guyline tension or adjust stakes. Thanks to the arched pole design and the clip attachment system, the tent quickly takes shape. It also requires only a relatively small footprint, which is particularly useful for wild camping, where you may want to pick up the tent and move it to a better spot with minimal effort. The groundsheet is sufficiently robust, although I also carried the optional footprint so that I could pitch the tent without the inner tent. This proved ideal in Scotland’s wet climate, allowing me to pack everything away and prepare breakfast while staying sheltered from the rain. When breaking camp, the wet flysheet and poles can be packed separately. Of course, there are always a few things one might wish for. Personally, I would have liked to see a few more storage pockets in the higher section of the inner tent. The stake attachment points could also be designed more simply (though this is something you can modify yourself). Overall, however, I found the Exogen to be a delightful and well-made backpacking tent, with all of its qualities brought together in a very well-balanced design.
