The right sleeping mat for your trip
A sleeping mat keeps you off the cold ground. How well it does that is shown by the R-value: the higher it is, the less heat you lose downwards. Weight, packed size and thickness matter too. At Wechsel you will find three types of camping mat – from a 300 g foam mat to a 7.5 cm self-inflating mat with an R-value of 7.2.
Air mats
Plenty of warmth for little weight: the Aera M weighs 490 g with an R-value of 6.0 and packs down to 20 x 12 cm.

Self-inflating mats
Foam core plus air: open the valve and the foam draws in air. Vasta 5.0 and Vasta 7.5 with R-values of 5.9 and 7.2.

Foam mats & roll mats
No valve, no air: closed-cell XPE or IXPE foam from 300 g, also as an underlay beneath an air mat.

Which R-value for which season?
Summer and huts: R-value around 2
For warm nights, bothies or as a sit mat, a foam mat such as the Mateno Z-Fold (R-value 1.7, 300 g) or the Coreo air mat (R-value 2.1) is enough.
Spring to autumn: R-value 2 to 5
For nights around freezing: the Glacio insulates with an R-value of 3.7 and packs down to 27 x 8 cm.
Winter: R-value 5 and above
For frost and snow: Aera M and L (R-value 6.0), Vasta 5.0 (5.9) and Vasta 7.5 (7.2). You will find all four under insulated sleeping mats.
R-values roughly add up. Put the Facila Comfort AX (R-value 2.0) under the Glacio (3.7) and you insulate at around 5.7. Our R-values are measured to ASTM F3340, so you can compare them directly with other brands that test to the same standard.
Lightweight mats for trekking and bikepacking
On the bike and in your rucksack, weight and packed size count. At 20 x 12 cm packed, the Aera M fits into a handlebar roll next to your tent. All mats under 750 g are listed under ultralight sleeping mats; matching tents are under bikepacking tents.
Care and repair
Store your sleeping mat unrolled with the valve open, and clean it by hand with warm water only. More under Care & Cleaning. Our repair service replaces valves on self-inflating mats.
Sleeping mat FAQs
What is the best sleeping mat for camping?
The one whose R-value suits the temperature and whose weight and packed size suit your kit. For trips with a rucksack or bike: Aera M (490 g, R-value 6.0). For car camping: Vasta 7.5 (7.5 cm thick, R-value 7.2). For huts, breaks and as an underlay: Mateno Z-Fold (300 g).
Sleeping mat or sleeping pad – is there a difference?
No. “Sleeping pad” is the American term, “sleeping mat”, “sleep mat” or “camping mat” the British one. All mean the insulating layer between you and the ground.
Sleeping mat or air bed?
A basic camping air bed has no insulating layer, so the air inside cools down overnight. Our air mats are insulated: the Aera and Glacio have a heat-reflective layer and reach R-values of 6.0 and 3.7.
How wide should a sleeping mat be?
The Aera M is narrow and light at 53 cm. You get more room on the Facila Comfort AX (60 cm), Coreo (62 cm), Vasta 5.0 (63 cm), Glacio (64 cm), Aera L (65 cm) and Vasta 7.5 (68 cm). Check that the mat fits your tent.
What should I do if my mat loses air?
Small holes in air and self-inflating mats can be patched. The Coreo has two separate air chambers: if one goes down, you lie on the other. Our repair service replaces valves on self-inflating mats.
